Play on the Pitch Returns for 2017

16th March 2017

It's back!!  Following the resounding success of Play on the Pitch 2016, Stewarton Bounce Back to Netball team will be staging their fantastic outdoor netball tournament on Kilmarnock FC's football pitch, this time on Saturday 10th June 2017.

Hundreds of netballers will once again take over Rugby Park to participate in “Play on the Pitch 2” on Kilmarnock FC’s all-weather, premier league pitch.  The competition will see Rugby Park turned into eight tournament netball courts with 32 teams from far and wide competing in a cup and plate tournament. For the first time, a ninth court on the pitch will be reserved for a junior schools competition, with participating teams from nearby local authority areas.

Trophies and awards will be presented directly after the tournament when players, supporters and spectators can celebrate and relax enjoying a well-earned, complimentary burger from the BBQ, beer (or soft drink) and some great live music. With loads of family entertainment also going on throughout the day, friends and families are invited to get along to cheer on their team from the terraces.

Once again all money raised will go towards reaching the £30,000 fundraising target to be shared between Stewarton Ladies Netball’s nominated charities - Scottish Autism, Scottish Disability Sport and Ayrshire Hospice.

One of the event organisers Sharon Kearney explains “Play on the Pitch 2 marks the continuation of an exciting fundraising campaign by Stewarton Ladies Netball, with the ambitious team staging a number of exciting fundraising events over the 18 months, culminating in a demanding overseas cycling challenge in 2017.  We are so thrilled to have the support of Kilmarnock Football Club once again and look forward to staging what is sure to be another unique and fun tournament, on the pitch at Rugby Park.  Registration is open now at https://www.ayrshirehospice.org/how-you-can-help/fundraising/events/play-on-the-pitch on a first come, first served basis!”

A maximum of twelve players can register per team. Teams will be randomly put into sections of four and play each other within their section.  In the afternoon session the top two teams within their section will go into the “winners group” and the bottom two into the “plate group”, with trophies to be won in both groups.  Each team will play a minimum of six x 15 minute games.

Supported by Netball Scotland, Lee Maclean Regional Development Manager (West South) said “Play on the Pitch 2 is a back and looking better than ever.  This is a great event for our member clubs to come together, have a bit of fun and ultimately raise a lot of money and awareness for the three amazing charities the ladies from BBN Stewarton have linked with.  Come on down, have some fun and let’s play some netball!”

Lee McCulloch, Interim Manager at Kilmarnock Football Club said “We are absolutely delighted to support Stewarton Ladies Netball by offering Rugby Park as a venue for their unique “Play on the Pitch” netball tournament in June.  As a club, we are keen to encourage participation in all kinds of sport and look forward to seeing another competitive sport being played on the pitch at Rugby Park!  We wish the ladies every success with their fundraising efforts.”
