National players in National press

Scottish netball has been making the headlines in a number of local and national papers in recent weeks.  Thank you very much to our wonderful volunteer Lucy MacKechnie, who has come on board with Netball Scotland to raise the profile of our sport in the media as well as acknowledge the successes and hard work of our players.  Please see below links to stories recently published about our girls;

 

 

  • Friday 27th April:  The Southern Reporter publishes an article about the Tweeddale Sports Awards where our Under 17 National player Jo Pettitt was given the Junior Sports Personality of the Year Award.  A very well done to Jo, all of your hardwork is paying off and you are getting the recognition you deserve.  Click here for the story.

  • Tuesday 6th March - Scotsman online (www.sport.scotsman.com) published an eye opening article on the commitment required from our National players, even at the tender age of 14.  This story follows youngest Scotland U17 player Jaimie Cooper on her travels from Kirkwall, Orkney to East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, almost every week in the run up to U17 Netball Europe.  Click here to access the story.

  • Netball Scotland recently received a copy of Breast Cancer Care's UK News Magazine for Winter 2011, and proudly spotted a fabulous picture and mention of the Scottish Thistles.  As you will have seen from the website homepage, the Thistles turned one of their training sessions into a Pink Party and were dressed up in all sorts of pink items from wigs, to feather boas, to crazy hats.  Click here to download the page from the Breast Cancer Care UK Winter 2011 magazine.

 

  • Thursday 28th July 2011 sees an excellent article in the Cumbernauld News about the hard work and dedication of three of Cumbernauld's junior players Chloe McGarvey (14), Leigh Valentine (14) and Amy Craig (15) who were recently succesfully selected for Under 17 National long squads (Chloe and Leigh) and Under 21 National long squad (Amy).  Please click here to read the full article online.

 

  • A few weeks ago the Hearld's Susan Swarbrick took to the court with Scottish Thistles June McNeill and Lynsey Gallagher.  With netball having been recently linked with the new Gold4Glasgow scheme, Susan was attending a national practise under the eyes of National Coach Denise Holland, to see if she had what it takes to be part of our squad.  Please click on the links below to download the pages of the article;

  • Following Erin McQuarrie obtaining her first ever senior National cap at the Netball Europe Championships last weekend, the Hillhead High School pupil was featured in Tuesday 19th April's edition of the Scotsman.  Click here to access the story.  On Thursday 19th May 2011, The Herald also featured a piece on Erin's recent successes in netball, the full article can be downloaded here.

 

  • South Lanarkshire's finest took to the court in the Netball Europe Championships recently, coming home with a bronze medal each.  The East Kilbride News features our girls on March 23rd - click here for the full story.

 

  • Under 17 National player Lauren Gilmour (Netball Orkney) was awarded 'Player's Player of the Tournament' from her squad for her outstanding performance against Wales, Northern Ireland and England at this year's Netball Europe Championships in Dublin.  She has since been featured in the pages of the Scotsman, click here for the story.

 

  • Having been picked to Captain the Under 17 Scotland team in their Netball Europe Championship match against England last weekend (11th-13th March 2011), Edinburgh's sole representation in the Scotland team, Hannah McCaig, has been featured in the Scotsman.  Please click here to be taken to the e-paper, and navigate to page 31.  Well done Hannah! 

 

 

  • This week's East Kilbride News showcases the talents from Claremont Netball Club and East Kilbride Netball Club who have 3 girls and 5 girls (respectively) representing their country and this weekend's Netball Europe Championships.  The article focuses on the successes of Sarah Kerr, Nicole Breen and Nicola McCleery (Claremont NC) and also mentions Cheryl Costello, Gillian Crozier, Lynsey Gallagher, Lauren McLeod and Emma Hardie (East Kilbride NC).  Click here to be taken to the full article.

 

 

  • Crystal Matthan, Perth & Kinross's sole representation in the Under 17 National squad has been nominated for Perth & Kinross Sports Council's Sports Personality of the Year Award.  The ceremony is being held on the 31st of March in Perth.  Click here to read the story from the Perthshire Adviser

 

  • Last week (14th February 2011), the Glasgow Wildcats received an extra bonus when they learned of a recent cash boost from Glasgow City Council to fund further development within the squad.  Click here for the full story.
