12th October 2017

Netball Scotland, in partnership with Perth College UHI and its new state of the art Academy of Sport and Wellbeing, have secured another exciting International netball event to add to the already exciting #RoadToGoldCoast journey for our Scottish Thistles athletes.

We recently brought you news of this partnership coming together to host the Netball Europe World Cup Qualifiers early in the New Year, the interest for which was so great that we have teamed up to bring Scottish netball fans an International Test Series between the Scottish Thistles and Samoa.

The Scottish Thistles will welcome Samoa to Perth for matches on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd December, the tickets for which will be released in the coming weeks – so watch out for this announcement.

Expect more of the excitement from the Netball Europe Open Championships (see below)when we welcome Samoa to Scotland.

Margaret Cook Principal and CEO of Perth College UHI stated

“We look forward to welcoming with Netball Scotland our guests from as far away as Samoa, Northern Ireland and Wales. We are delighted to play our part in bringing major events to Perth and we will use these events not only to showcase world class sport but also to showcase our College, our students and the City of Perth.”

Claire Nelson CEO Netball Scotland stated

“The Test Series against Samoa and the World Cup Qualifiers are critical to our Commonwealth Games preparation and we can promise spectators an incredible series of top class netballing action. I am delighted to be bringing the Scottish Thistles to Perth. We look forward to seeing the Thistle army out in force to support our athletes in these vital international events”

Gareth McKenna- Commercial Manager Academy of Sport and Wellbeing stated

“We are delighted to have secured these 2 major international netball events, we are working with many NGB ‘s to build sustainable partnerships, with Netball Scotland we are working with a modern, forward thinking and dynamic body and we are delighted and honoured to bring international senior netball to Perth for first time in 30 years”

10th October 2017

What a weekend!

The Scottish Thistles are the talk of the town following their weekend in Wales - securing fantastic wins against 7th in the world Wales (58-49) and 8th in the world Fiji (52-34).  Not only did the Thistles also push England to their best result in over a decade (48-61), they also wowed the crowds in Cardiff and those watching online through Netball Europe's live streaming in their final match of the weekend against Northern Ireland.  An excrutiating 60 minutes of all out netball - there were highs, there were lows, a draw between both sides for most of the game.  Rather heartbreakingly, Northern Ireland were able to sink a shot in the final seconds of the game and therefore took the Silver Spot (45-46).

Although a disappointing end to a hugely successful Netball Europe campaign, this has lit a FIRE in our Scottish Thistles as they look ahead to their #RoadToGoldCoast.  Netball Scotland and Netball Europe are teaming up to deliver the World Cup Qualifiers in January 2018 - during which the Thistles, Northern Ireland and Wales will be going head to head, with the Top 2 teams qualifying for the Netball World Cup 2019 event.  After this monumental event, the Thistles will then be setting their sights on departing for the Gold Coast in late March for the Commonwealth Games 2018 as part of Team Scotland.

28th September 2017

Netball Scotland are excited to launch our brand-new media campaign #ThistlesThursday to mark the start of an incredible 9 months for our National athletes from now through to the Netball World Cup Qualifiers in January, to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April and beyond, in their amazing new look Viper10 kit.  First on the agenda for our athletes - the 2017 Netball Europe Championships.

Head of Performance and National Coach Gail Parata - “I am delighted to announce the Scottish Thistles National team to compete at the 2017 Netball Europe championships in Cardiff next week.  We are looking forward to competing and testing our Thistles against four top 10 world ranking teams.

Our team is made up of a mixture of experience and youth.  In particular, four key members from the Scotland Under 21 team that were instrumental in achieving an 8th placing at the Netball World Youth Cup – Kelly Boyle, Bethan Goodwin, Sarah MacPhail and Niamh McCall - all of whom have continued their good form into the recent Scottish Thistle trials to earn their selection into this squad.

We also welcome back the Thistles’ currently most capped athlete, Hayley Mulheron, who returns to Scottish soil from living and working in Australia. Claire Brownie (fresh from the Fast 5s All Stars competition at the weekend) will Captain our team once again.”

Congratulations to the following Scottish Thistles who have been selected to compete at the 2017 Netball Europe Championships in Cardiff from the 5th – 8th October:
