1st Test Australia 78 Scotland 22
The much anticipated day arrived seeing Scotland take on the Aussie Word Champions currently ranked 1st in the world. Given that 5 senior players from their usual line up were unavailable it was a young Aussie Squad that took to the court with 6 players having received less than 6 caps for their country in previous international matches. Coach Norma Plummer said of this ‘despite their inexperience the player’s performance at camp warranted their selection and I think they are going to grow on tour’.
1st Quarter – 16-10
Scotland started the game with confidence and despite the reputation of their opponents did not seem over awed by the Aussies. Both teams were scoring consistently goal for goal reaching 7 each after just 10 minutes but the last 5 minutes of the quarter saw the Aussies speed of pass become more obvious resulting in the quarter time score of 16-10
2nd Quarter – 19-4
The Aussies continued the form they had shown at the end of the 1st quarter pulling away to a 23-10 lead. There was a great battle of wills between the 2 centres during this quarter - Brownie and Green. When Scotland played first time balls it became increasingly difficult for the Aussies to defend – with Scotland patiently working the ball into the circle but the Aussies showed resilience and strength in defence. There was great defence by the Scottish GD Claire Cooper & GK Hayley Mulheron forcing 2 Aussie errors in a row when passing into the circle. Scotland were fighting all the way and went into the half time break with the score at 35-14
3rd Quarter – 24-3
Both teams made player changes in this quarter giving squad players some court time. Scotland started this quarter a little unsettled and took their time to settle into the new formation, sometimes struggling with centre passes giving the Aussies plenty of turnovers. The Aussies were now getting into a rhythm – from the centre pass there were 3 passes and an almost certain goal from their shooter Bassett albeit with some nice interceptions from Hayley Mulheron at GK throughout the quarter which ended 59-17
4th Quarter – 19-5
This quarter saw player changes for both teams and a more confident and consistent start from Scotland. Again Scotland had to be patient getting into the circle as the Aussies tightened their defence, but they did not panic. The crowd tried to lift the Scotland players but were equally appreciative of the quick passing skills of the Aussies. The Aussies increased pressure with a full court defence but Scotland stuck to task. The Aussie machine continued to build on their goal tally and the final score ended 78-22

We started a little bit slow but we had some new kids out there and they just needed to settle into the match. They came home strongly and really stepped up their defensive game and I was pleased with what they delivered."
