UKCC

What is the UKCC?

The United Kingdom Coaching Certificate (UKCC) is a Government led strand of work that arose from the recommendations of the Coaching Task Force of 2002.

31 sports, including Netball, are involved in this UK wide initiative to standardise and improve Coaching Awards and Coach Education across sports.

Netball Scotland has been working in close partnership with England Netball and the Welsh Netball Association towards the development of the UKCC to bring this innovative and fresh approach to Netball.

The UKCC will positively change the shape and quality of Coach Education within and across Netball.

What does the UKCC mean for our Coaches?

The UKCC in Netball will professionalise the role of the coach by creating a framework of UK-wide recognised coaching standards as a result of which the UKCC will act as a sport-wide recognised seal of quality coaching.

Benefits for our Coaches:

  • An SQA endorsed qualification
  • Enhanced Coaching skills through UKCC programme, linked to the player pathway
  • A professionalised role for Sports Coaching
  • More flexible Coach-centred training programmes
  • Sport-wide recognised seal of quality qualifications
  • Provides a benchmark for employers and deployers of coaches
  • Core coaching skills are recognised and transferable between sports

Current Netball Scotland Level 1, Level 2 & Level 3 Coaches

Level 1

If you hold a Netball Scotland Level 1 you are not required to update your award to the new UKCC Level 1 at this time.  You can access the new UKCC Level 2 when this is launched in Scotland in 2008 to continue through the Netball Scotland coaching pathway as before.  Should you not wish to continue to Level 2 before 2010, you will be required to sit the new UKCC Level 1 as a pre-requisit to Level 2.

Level 2

If you hold a Netball Scotland Level 2 you will be given an opportunity to 'upgrade' your qualification in seasons 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 by transferring across to the new UKCC Level 2.  This will be the only opportunity prior to the 2010 recommendation date to upgrade your award; thereafter you will be required to take the UKCC Level 2 qualification as a pre-requisit to Level 3 and then continue through the coaching pathway as before.

Level 3

For current Level 3 coaches, more information will follow on transferring your award.

If I already have my Netball Scotland award, why do I have to go through another award?

The UKCC hits specific benchmarked standards in coaching and therefore the UKCC Netball course will strengthen your coaching and technical skills.  Furthermore, our UK aim is to sit in the top 8 countries in the world alongside England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and for this reason it is important that all of our coaches meet these standards for the advancement of our netball players and our overall game.  This will strengthen our team from grass roots to elite level and you are an important individual in this new and exciting team!
