Aberdeen join Netball Scotland in growing the game

20th January 2023

Netball Scotland today announced their partnership with Albyn School in Aberdeen. The significant growth in schools partnering with the governing body highlights the importance of inspiring girls and empowering them by creating access to netball in Scotland.

Geraldine McGuire, Head of Development at Netball Scotland said, “We are delighted to continue building our infrastructure of partnerships to support the growth and development of netball across Scotland.  Today we formally welcome, Albyn School in Aberdeen into the Netball Family as a partner who contributes to both the school estate and wider community through growing the school netball club, hosting Aberdeen District Netball Association activity and offering a range of opportunities for engagement in our sport.”

Stefan Horsman, Head Teacher, Albyn School added, “We are delighted to be working with Netball Scotland. This exciting step for Albyn will allow us to combine expertise and experience with a dynamic and forward-thinking governing body, to open up opportunities to access netball for women and girls across Northeast Scotland. This is an inspiring and important partnership for empowering girls through sport.”

Studies have found girls continue to have lower physical literacy than boys throughout every age group, and especially in relation to enjoyment, confidence and competence. The largest gender differences can be seen in school years 9-11. (www.womeninsport.org)

• Just over a third of girls (34%) in years 9-11 enjoy taking part in sport and exercise, compared to more than half of boys (55%).

• Twice as many boys (39%) in years 9-11 feel confident when exercising or playing sport compared to just 19% of girls.

Jimmy Lamont, Head of PE & Sport, Albyn School said – “It’s great to be one of the first Netball Scotland Partnership Schools in Scotland. We are really looking forward to introducing new and exciting initiatives across the North East of Scotland that will hopefully encourage more pupils to take up the sport.”
