National League Club Spotlight: Glasgow University

Overview
Glasgow University are bringing a fresh new approach to the National League for the 2024/25 season. Under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Julie Mason, the team is embracing a new era of change with new on-court personnel, a new playstyle and an updated approach to balancing training with studies. After placing sixth last season the team captained by Anna Sherry and Elise McFarland are looking to make the step up this season with a goal of matching the other university squads.

Team updates
As with all university squads, there have been a number of changes throughout the team. Perhaps the biggest change for the club as a whole has been the head coach Julie Mason’s decision to merge training for the first, second, and third teams to improve cohesion and allow third-team players smoother transitions when called up for substitutions.

Coach overview:
Julie Mason: “My initial focus is on fostering a dynamic, athlete-centred environment where players are empowered to think critically, adapt creatively, and bring flair to their game.
“For university clubs transition and change can be challenging, but they also create opportunities for growth. Together with the support of the committee, we’re focusing on building a cohesive team that not only excels in competition but also supports each other through the demands of university life. The aim is to play intelligent, exciting netball that empowers these young women both on and off the court.”
Captain overview:
Anna Sherry and Elise McFarland: “As co-captains of Glasgow University Netball, we’re looking to lead with positivity, set the standard, and be role models for our teammates. We’ve been in the club for the last four years so we know the ins and outs, we know how it feels to be a new player, and know what it’s like to be going through university and want to create an environment where everyone can enjoy netball.
“Julie’s just newly into her role, but, she got a lot of really exciting stuff going on behind the scenes and we’re really looking forward to working together with her and getting our performance programmes for the season ahead. For us personally, this is our final season with the club and we’re determined to make it memorable, playing with passion, supporting each other, and embracing every challenge as a team.”
First Match:
Glasgow University opening their season when they take on Saltires at 1435 on Sunday 8 December at Pleasance in Edinburgh. Last season’s match-up was a fast and hard-fought encounter with Uni edging out the Saltires 52-49.
