Following the launch of our 2019-2023 Strategic Plan – Realising Netball’s Potential: A long term vision of success, Netball Scotland is proud to launch our Local Association consultation.  As part of our ongoing commitment to the development of our sport, we are seeking to enhance our partnerships with Local Associations around the country to deliver quality domestic development, league and competition opportunities.  We hope to provide resources & expertise to support growth and development at a local level and establish robust, connected & impactful partnerships facilitating collaborative development opportunities.

Over the next two seasons we will be entering into a consultation process with member Local Associations.  This process will provide valuable insights into the role and responsibilities of the Local Associations enabling us to develop netball in Scotland for generations to come.

As an organisation we believe that we should aspire to be world class in all that we do, on and off the court, from grassroots to the International stage.  To do this, the latest strategic cycle sees us enter phase 2 of a 3-part long term strategy.  We are striving to strengthen and enhance the capability and resource within the organisation in order to deliver the highest standards of governance and to support the ambitions of a thriving, sustainable and successful NGB, all to achieve our vision:

For Netball in Scotland to be a Thriving, World Class Sport.

As we move into this new strategic cycle, we as an organisation remain committed to strengthening our sport for the future and our ultimate mission remains the same:

• Leading the sustainable growth of netball through raising performance, profile and participation at every level of the pathway.
• Advancing the organisational infrastructure to enable all to enjoy the sport of netball, for life.
• Empowering our people to succeed and thrive.

This will be supported by a strengthened operational model which will allow us to enhance our Pathway to deliver a world class system of programmes, competition, education and people which in turn will produce top talent and quality opportunities to play and progress within our sport.  Through this we are creating a sustainable strategy for our sport for generations to come.

As a sport and Governing Body we are moving forward from a position of strength and now we must build a durable and high performing infrastructure by strengthening our organisation and enhancing our pathway.

This next phase will begin with a consultation period to take netball into this new era.

This Membership survey will provide us with valuable insights into our members perceptions of our current Membership Services and let us know whether we are moving in the right direction.  We want a Thriving Membership that feels valued, has access to appropriate and relevant opportunities to develop and enjoy the sport, and feels connected to the wider netball community.

In addition, this next phase will also see us build a durable and high performing infrastructure to enhance our pathway through The Local Association Engagement Strategy.

We will also soon be launching into our Local Association Consultation, a project to deliver an empowered and connected Local Association network that works in partnership with Netball Scotland to deliver quality domestic development, league and competition opportunities.

This consultation will facilitate collaborative working and create deeper and more impactful partnerships for enhanced development opportunities.  It will also provide us with insights into what resources and support Local Authorities need from us, the governing body to achieve sustainable growth and development at local level.

The growth of our sport is unprecedented and while this is an exciting time for us all, it has never been more critical to ensure that the foundations are strong enough to not only maintain but to support future growth.  This phase will see us build a durable and high performing infrastructure by strengthening our organisation and enhancing our pathway.   We want to deliver organisational excellence across the entire business, driven by the most talented, passionate and innovative people in sport and underpinned by a sustainable business model.

Netball Scotland are delighted to officially launch our new National Academy programme. Following a review of our pathway, this central programme will replace the previously known Development Academies. Netball Scotland have created a National Hub, which oversees the National Academy and U17s long squad programme and allows for competition and additional support for our young athletes.

We are delighted to announce the 33 athletes that have been selected into the inaugural year of the National Academy Programme. This will increase opportunities to develop our athletes, coaches and officials whilst developing a challenging and competitive environment for our #FutureThistles.

As the hub involves the development of U17 and academy athlete and coaches, we have appointed Kym Wharton to lead this programme to ensure an integrated developmental approach. Kym has a strong background in developing young athletes and have previously held coaching roles within the Netball Scotland Development Academies and Scotland U17 squad.

Furthermore, we have appointed 4 Assistant Coaches and 6 specialist coaches making this programme one of the most supported by experienced coaches. This shows Netball Scotland’s investment into our #FutureThistles as we build towards the Netball World Youth Cup in 2021.

Scottish Women’s Institutes and Netball Scotland have teamed up to take Walking Netball to women across Scotland in a new initiative designed to expand pathways to sport.

The partnership will see more than 14,000 women encouraged to participate in the sport, which is set to be played in village halls and school gyms up and down the country.

Walking Netball is a slower version of the game; it is netball, but at a walking pace. The game has been designed so that anyone can play it regardless of age or fitness level.

A number of SWI members have been trained by Netball Scotland’s facilitators and can now pass on their skills and enthusiasm in their local Institutes to encourage participation and activity. The collaboration will now see members in 663 institutes across Scotland given the opportunity to participate in the gentle activity no matter their experience.

Scottish Women’s Institutes President, Linda Retson, said: “This is an exciting collaboration for us. The Walking Netball programme will join golf, bowls and curling as a key sport for Scottish Women’s Institutes and we are delighted to be working with Netball Scotland and give members a fun, friendly, sociable, safe and very exciting new activity. Getting together to have fun and exercise our bodies and minds fits perfectly with Scottish Women’s Institutes’ outlook and we believe Walking Netball will be a huge hit.”

Geraldine McGuire, Head of Development, Netball Scotland said: “The partnership between Netball Scotland and the SWI celebrates a joint vision to empower women across Scotland. Through the platform of walking netball, we will collaboratively enable women to build vibrant communities across the country where they can learn new skills, share experiences, build friendships and support networks and most importantly have fun.

As a Governing body, Netball Scotland is leading the way in Scotland in the Changing Lives Agenda. This partnership showcases our commitment to extending our reach out with the sporting sector, building networks of expert resource and knowledge which contribute to achieving Active Scotland Outcomes. Together with our partners at Age Scotland and Breathing Space we very much welcome the opportunity to expand our walking netball programme through the SWI membership.”

Netball Scotland, in conjunction with other governing bodies (Triathlon, SDS, RYA & Scottish Curling), have collaboratively come together to deliver a bespoke CPD package comprised of 3 modules that focuses on developing the coach and a further 3 modules that are netball specific.

This programme is aimed at L2 coaches who want to progress and develop their skills especially around mentoring, reflective practice and creative coaching.
