Accelerating Action Across Four Generations

8th March 2025

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, Netball Scotland proudly highlights the transformative power of netball in empowering women and girls of all ages. Under this year’s theme, #AccelerateAction, we recognise the dedication of individuals like Marianne Murray, whose lifelong passion for netball has created opportunities for players young and old, and Maureen Murphy, who proves that it’s never too late to be part of the netball community.

Breaking Barriers with Seated Netball

At 87 years old, Maureen Murphy embodies the spirit of inclusivity in sport. With no prior netball experience, she found a new sense of purpose through Seated Netball at St Joseph’s Nursing Home, a program established with the guidance of Mhairi Patience. Despite limited mobility, Maureen actively participates in every session, engaging socially and forming meaningful friendships. Her journey highlights how netball can break barriers and create opportunities for all abilities.

A Lifelong Commitment to Growth

Marianne Murray’s netball journey began at the age of eight under the guidance of coach Winnie Cosar, sparking a lifelong passion for the sport. She played at both school and club levels and later joined Cumbernauld Netball Club, where she helped lead the team to victory in the Glasgow Netball Association’s first league in Division 2 during their debut season. Although she played at the district level, Marianne chose not to trial for the Scottish team. Alongside her playing career, she coached Year 1 pupils and supported a youth club, mentoring many players who went on to compete at district and national levels. Marianne also qualified as an umpire and completed numerous coaching courses, always looking for ways to give back to the sport.

Before COVID-19, Marianne launched a Bounce Back to Netball group, which started with 45 players on its first night and continues to provide a welcoming, inclusive environment for women of all ages. For Marianne, netball has not only fostered lifelong friendships but also allowed her to promote teamwork, confidence, and independence in young girls, helping them develop leadership skills and a strong sense of community through sport.

Returning to the Game

Louise McLaughlin’s netball journey began in Primary 5, where she first discovered her love for the sport. She continued playing throughout her school years but later stepped away from the game. However, her passion for netball never faded, and as an adult, she found her way back through the Bounce Back to Netball program. Inspired by the sense of community and teamwork, Louise took on a new role—coaching the U11 group with Cumbernauld Netball Club. Now committed to furthering her coaching skills, she is set to undertake her coaching awards this year. Louise finds immense joy in nurturing the next generation of players and instilling confidence, all while continuing to enjoy the sport herself.

Next Generation with Thea

Thea McLaughlin’s netball journey began in Primary 4 when she joined her school’s netball club, led by Marianne Murray. Her enthusiasm for the sport quickly grew, leading her to join Cumbernauld Netball Club last August. Since then, Thea has taken to the court in competitive tournaments with both the Glasgow Netball Association and the Lanarkshire Netball Association, gaining valuable experience and confidence along the way. Netball has given Thea the opportunity to develop new skills and form friendships that extend beyond school.
