Falcons Soar High Over Reigning Champs Hawks

Aberdeen Sports Village played host to the electrifying opening round of the 3rd annual Super Cup Tournament last Saturday. Four dynamic teams – Falcons, Hawks, Eagles, and Harriers – clashed, setting the stage for a thrilling competition.

The standout game of the day was the face-off between reigning champions, the Hawks, and the resurgent Falcons, who finished a surprising 4th last season. The Falcons, having undergone a significant transformation this year, showcased a blend of fresh talent and experienced stalwarts, aiming to rewrite the narrative.

The game commenced with both teams showing equal mettle, ending the first quarter with a tense 16-16 tie. However, the Falcons soon displayed their renewed vigour, propelling ahead to claim a dominant 65-52 victory over the Hawks. This remarkable win gives insight into the revamped Falcons squad’s potential for the rest of the tournament.

In the aftermath of their triumphant match, Falcons’ star Emily Nicholl couldn’t hold back her enthusiasm, stating,

“What a way to start the Super Cup. The Falcons have never beaten Hawks, so it was a fantastic result and even better to use our whole squad. We can’t wait for next week!”

Head coach of the Falcons, Frances-Anne Doyle, echoed these sentiments, reflecting on the team’s renewed spirit and capabilities.

“Some of our squad are coming off the back of a successful summer at the World Cup and Commonwealth Youth Games. To have those experiences as a squad is fantastic,”

she noted, proudly pointing out the harmonious blend in her team which includes stars like Emily Nicholl, Emma Barrie, and rising talents Emma Love, Zara Flett, and Lexy Gillies.

Characterising their team as “fierce, determined, and united,” the Falcons are keen on carrying forward this winning momentum.

Their next challenge? A showdown with the Harriers, who themselves made a statement with a resounding 65-33 victory over the Eagles. Coach Doyle is clear about her team’s direction, asserting,

“We expect our team to build week on week, be fearless and attack each game as it comes.”

For fans eager to witness more live action, the second round promises exhilarating matches. Falcons will square off against Harriers at 11 am, followed by the Eagles taking on Hawks at 1 pm on Saturday, 30th, at the University of Glasgow, Stevenson Building.
