Inspiring the Next Generation: The “Pass It On” event that empowers young girls through sport

The Pass It On Netball Festival, organised by both Netball Scotland and Angus Alive, brought together girls aged 8–12 years from across Angus for a fun-filled day of activity, learning, and teamwork. Held as part of a shared commitment to growing grassroots sport, the event aimed to introduce young players to netball in a supportive and inclusive environment. The festival buzzed with excitement from start to finish, as young athletes rotated through a series of skills and drills, team challenges, and match play sessions, each designed to boost confidence, coordination, and a love for being active.
A special feature was the “Hopes and Dreams” pinboard, where young players shared their aspirations both on and off the court. Impressively, over 40% of participants were completely new to netball, showcasing the event’s success in inspiring the next generation of players.
The day concluded with an unforgettable glow-in-the-dark netball experience, adding an extra spark to an already vibrant celebration of sport and community.
Beyond the action on court, the festival also highlighted the wider benefits of sport for young girls. Events like this encourage lifelong fitness habits, helping participants discover the joy of being active while improving strength, coordination, and overall wellbeing.
Equally important were the social connections formed throughout the day. By working together, supporting teammates, and celebrating successes, the girls built friendships and confidence that extend well beyond the court. These shared experiences help create a sense of belonging and empowerment — values at the heart of both Netball Scotland and Angus Alive programmes.
“It was fantastic to see so many young girls getting involved, especially those trying netball for the very first time,” said Grace Carson, Netball Scotland. “Events like this are about more than just sport — they’re about giving girls the confidence to be active, connect with others, and believe in what they can achieve both on and off the court.”
Ross Taylor, Angus Alive, added: “Working in partnership with Netball Scotland gives young people across Angus the chance to experience something new in a supportive and exciting environment. Seeing the enthusiasm, energy, and teamwork throughout the day was truly inspiring, and we hope many of these girls continue playing netball in the future.”
