Queensferry High School Hosts Successful Netball Festivals

Queensferry High School was the venue for recent junior and senior netball festivals, which saw participation from 170 pupils from eight schools across Edinburgh and Fife. The event demonstrated the school’s commitment to promoting netball, involving students of all ages and genders.
Event Overview
The festivals were held over two days on the school’s outdoor astro and courts. This setting provided an excellent opportunity for pupils to engage in netball games, marking the end of the school year. The event grouped participants from years S1 to S6, offering a platform for both competitive and friendly play.
Support and Contributions
Netball Scotland supported the event by sending three special guests who played significant roles throughout the festivals. Sam Bealing, a pathway umpire, officiated during the day, ensuring fair play and imparting rules knowledge to the young participants. Norma Maynard, Netball Development Officer for Edinburgh, attended the junior festival, engaging with teachers about school affiliation and even stepping in to help with umpiring and prize distribution. Correen Davis, National Development Manager, was present on the senior day, where she discussed the boys’ pathway and opportunities in umpiring courses, and also took part in the prize-giving ceremony.
Community Engagement and Development
The event was made possible by the involvement of 14 volunteers, 12 umpires, and 16 teachers, demonstrating strong community collaboration. A total of 150 girls and 20 boys took part, highlighting the inclusive nature of the festivals and the school’s efforts to engage a diverse group of students.

“Putting together an event like this requires a tremendous team effort, and I cannot praise enough the dedication and hard work of all the volunteers, team members, and especially our Netball Scotland staff who made this festival a success. It’s heartening to see so many young people taking part, learning new skills, and making new friends through netball.”
Encouraging Wider Participation
Queensferry High School’s netball festivals serve as a model for how schools can foster a love for the sport and encourage healthy competition through well-organised events. Schools looking to enhance their sports programs are encouraged to consider a secondary school license with Netball Scotland. For an annual fee of only £30, schools can gain support, free educational resources for setting up netball sessions, and opportunities to participate in further competitions, promoting the sport among students.
