Spotlight on Netball: Scottish Government Takes the Lead

In the heart of Edinburgh, the Scottish government’s emphasis on Netball during Women and Girls in Sport week is palpable. Among the sports celebrated, netball is gaining special attention. This commitment is further underscored by Jenni Minto’s – the Minister for Public Health and Women’s Health – visit to the Edinburgh Netball Club.
Embracing Inclusivity and Growth
Founded in 1971, Edinburgh Netball Club symbolises netball’s rich history in Scotland. This week, however, the focus isn’t solely on past achievements. The government’s initiative has a broader purpose. It champions inclusivity, ensuring every individual, regardless of her background, feels invited to the sport. Moreover, the benefits aren’t limited to physical fitness; they extend to mental and social realms too.

A Minister’s Reflections
During her visit, Minister Minto expressed her joy. She said,
“It was a pleasure to join Edinburgh Juniors Netball Team and Netball Scotland to hear about the development and growth of the game during Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week 2023.
“It is encouraging to see people of all different ages and abilities training and playing together in a fun and inclusive environment. For the younger players to have strong and highly visible role models at each session to support them through their own netball journey is inspiring.
“I spoke to one girl who has now left school and is in an apprenticeship – for her, netball is more than a sport, it’s about teamwork and building life skills.
“People can also return to the game or support it through training and umpiring. Having played myself I know netball is a sport which embraces all stages of women’s lives.”

Netball Today and Tomorrow
Today, with 48 junior teams competing locally, Edinburgh Netball Club is a hub for young aspirants. These teams, filled with enthusiastic players, showcase the sport’s unifying power. As the Scottish government throws its weight behind netball, the future looks even brighter.
