UPDATE: Netball Scotland Digital Awards
21st June 2019
Following the recent announcement of NSAWARDS19 earlier this month, we received some concerns about the final public voting procedure and its effect on the final result. We have since made some changes to the final vote, in the hopes that the result will be balanced across all categories – public voting will now account for 30% of the final outcome, whilst 70% will be decided by the Netball Scotland Selection Panel who will review the nomination information anonymously.
- The voting panel will independently decide the finalists, pick their winner and rank the runners up. (70% weight)
- The public will be presented with the finalists via social media and asked to vote for their favourites. The finalist with the most votes decided by the public will be the winner and runners up ranked thereafter. (30% weight)
- From there the public and panel votes will be added together and divided by 100 (70% + 30% = 100%) to give us our final ranked positions.
How the Maths works
| Rank | Club | Points |
| 1st | Club 1 | 4 |
| 2nd | Club 2 | 3 |
| 3rd | Club 3 | 2 |
| 4th | Club 4 | 1 |
Points
Say we have 4 finalists – Each ranking will be assigned points, 1st place being the highest will receive 4 points 4th place being the lowest will receive 1 point.
| Rank | Club | Panel Vote (70%) |
| 1st | Club 1 | Winner |
| 2nd | Club 2 | 2nd |
| 3rd | Club 3 | 3rd |
| 4th | Club 4 | 4th |
Panel Vote
Club 1 has been voted through the panel vote as the winner so will accrue 4 points. And since the panel vote accounts for 70% of the overall vote we multiply 4 points by 70 to accrue 280 points from the panel vote.
| Rank | Club | Public Vote (30%) |
| 1st | Club 4 | Winner |
| 2nd | Club 2 | 2nd |
| 3rd | Club 1 | 3rd |
| 4th | Club 3 | 4th |
Public Vote
However, in the public vote Club 1 was ranked in 3rd place so will accrue 2 points. And since the public vote accounts for 30% of the overall vote we multiply 2 points by 30 to accrue 60 points from the public vote.
| Club | Final Points |
| Club 1 | 3.4 |
| Club 2 | 3.0 |
| Club 3 | 1.7 |
| Club 4 | 1.8 |
Final Points
Now for the final points we add the panel points and public vote points together (280 + 60 = 340) and divide the total by 100 (70% + 30% = 100%). Meaning Club 1 gets 3.4 points in total from both votes (340 divided by 100 = 3.4).
| Club | Final Ranking |
| Club 1 | 1st |
| Club 2 | 2nd |
| Club 3 | 4th |
| Club 4 | 3rd |
Final Ranking
This calculation is performed for each ranking and the final points are ranked highest (1st place) to lowest (4th place).
We hope this change to voting will make the final result fairer and more balanced. This example has shown that the public vote can have an impact on the Panel vote, but not to the degree that any has an unfair advantage over the other.
